The Nigerian Stock Exchange 50 Index (NGX-50) Profile

The Nigerian Stock Exchange 50 Index, also known as the NGX-50, is a market capitalisation-weighted index that comprises the 50 most capitalised companies listed on the Nigerian Stock Exchange (NGX). The index is considered to be a benchmark index for the Nigerian stock market and is used to measure the performance of the top 50 companies listed on the NSE. It is calculated using the free float market capitalisation method, which gives a more accurate picture of the market capitalisation of companies by excluding restricted shares. The NGX-50 is reviewed quarterly and any changes to the index composition are made at the end of the review period. The index has been designed to serve as a basis for index-linked products such as exchange-traded funds and index funds. It also serves as a benchmark for the performance of the Nigerian stock market and as a benchmark for investment portfolios. The NGX-50 has been in existence since January 1, 1984 and has a base value of 100 as of that date.
