- Letshego has confirmed the appointment of the Group’s former Group Chief Operating Officer, Aobakwe Aupa Monyatsi as Group Chief Executive of Letshego Holdings Ltd with immediate effect, subject to regulatory approvals.
- Monyatsi brings more than two decades of pan-African regional banking and tech innovation expertise to the role, and has played an integral role in engineering Letshego’s digital Transformation Strategy in his previous role as Group COO, launched in September 2020.
- This appointment is reflective of the Group’s success in building an effective succession pipeline of talent within the business as Letshego progresses towards its world-class vision.
Gaborone, Botswana – Friday 10 June 2022: The Board of Letshego Holdings Limited has affirmed the appointment of Aobakwe “Aupa” Monyatsi as Group Chief Executive with immediate effect, subject to regulatory approvals. Prior to this appointment Monyatsi held the same role in an interim capacity from 4 May 2022, having led the inclusive finance entity’s digitalisation of systems and operations for the last two years in his inaugural position as Group Chief Operating Officer (Group COO).
Aupa is a well-rounded and experienced pan-African regional banker, with demonstrated tech and digital-savvy expertise having spearheaded and developed innovation and virtual channel strategies in his previous role as Absa Group’s Managing Executive for Alternative Channels. His career journey has provided Africa-wide experience from Ghana, Senegal, Nigeria and Kenya, having led a team in incubating fintech’s that drive financial inclusion through mobile money, block chain and AI (Artificial Intelligence). With a clear balance of financial and technical experience, Aupa is ideally placed to steer Letshego into the Group’s next chapter of embedding and monetising the Group’s recent investment into digital systems and product innovation.

During his career at ABSA Botswana, Aupa was Chief Operating Officer and Head of Distribution Channels, with his latest role being Acting Managing Director for ABSA Botswana before transferring to the bank’s Africa head office in South Africa, as Managing Executive for Alternative Channels.

BIOGRAPHY OF AOBAKWE “AUPA” MONYATSI
Aupa Monyatsi was appointed Group Chief Executive for Letshego Holdings Limited on 10 June 2022, having held the role on an interim basis for four weeks. Aupa joined Letshego as Group Chief Operating Officer in March 2020, and is a well-rounded and experienced regional banker, bringing over two decades of leadership expertise gained from various senior roles in Africa’s financial services sector.
Prior to joining Letshego, Aupa led numerous teams within the Absa Barclays Group, with the most recent role being Managing Executive: Alternative Channels, where he was responsible for spearheading and developing the regional bank’s digital innovation and virtual channel strategy. Having spent several years traveling between Ghana, Senegal and Nigeria incubating select fintech’s to drive financial inclusion through mobile money, block chain and Artificial Intelligence (AI), Aupa’s digital and technical expertise evolved into a proficient passion. In line with his focus and expertise in fintech development, Aupa also spent time in Silicon Valley (USA) and Spain to benchmark global trends in innovation.
Prior to the Absa Group role, Aupa held numerous leadership positions in Barclays Botswana, including Chief Operating Officer and Head of Distribution Channels, with his latest role being Acting Managing Director Botswana before transferring to ABSA Group responsibilities from Absa’s regional head office in South Africa. Aupa commenced his career in auditing with PWC Botswana.
